Urualla is a historic clan located in Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria. It is one of the major ancient communities that make up the Ideato region — a name derived from “Ide” (meaning strong or great) and “Ato” (meaning three) — representing the three principal clans of the old Ideato.
The town of Urualla also serves as the headquarters of Ideato North, reflecting its central role in the political and cultural identity of the area.
The people of Urualla trace their ancestry to a proud lineage of industrious, peace-loving, and community-driven forebears who valued unity, tradition, and progress. Over time, Urualla grew into a federation of eight major communities — including Umuezemeazu, Uzoakoli, Ozu, Ozuomee, Umuago-Ndide, Umuakoli, and others — bound together by shared customs and kinship.

Urualla is traditionally led by a paramount ruler known as the Eze Urualla, who symbolizes unity and cultural preservation for all constituent communities. One of the longest-reigning monarchs in modern times was Eze Barr. Edwin Ekwosu Okosisi Ezeanyika (Eze Urualla XI), whose reign spanned over four decades of peace, progress, and cultural revival.

The Eze-in-Council, comprising titled chiefs and representatives from the villages, continues to uphold the community’s governance, mediating between tradition and the demands of modern development.

Urualla people are known for their vibrant New Yam Festival, communal gatherings, and hospitality. The clan maintains a deep respect for elders, hard work, and education — values that continue to inspire younger generations across Nigeria and abroad. Traditional dances, age-grade systems, and festivals play a vital role in strengthening unity and preserving the cultural fabric of the community.

Despite facing challenges such as gully erosion and infrastructure decline, Urualla remains resilient. In recent years, both the federal and state governments, along with local initiatives, have launched major erosion control and road rehabilitation projects to restore the beauty and accessibility of the town.

Through collective efforts — at home and in the diaspora — the Urualla Clan Assembly continues to promote development, cultural preservation, and the well-being of every son and daughter of Urualla.
